In-Depth Squeezebox Touch Review:
If you already know about Logitech’s Squeezebox line, then you already know they are Wi-Fi radio’s that use a media server to pull your favorite tunes directly over your home’s Internet network. The Squeezebox Touch is the newest addition to the family, and did not have an easy start. The release date for this unit was pushed back multiple times which I believe allowed Logitech to get it right the first time! They aimed at producing a unit that would pair well with a home’s existing entertainment center, and I must say they hit the nail on the head. Though the unit does not have a built in speaker it can be paired up with just about any audio output device, and it can do this very well. Many people may see this as a downside, but in my opinion they made the right call. Sacrificing a speaker allowed them to create a unit capable of producing extraordinary sound quality.
When coupled with your home audio system the Squeezebox Touch uses 24-bit digital to analog converter to produce crisp and clean sound. Even when coupled with something as simple as a boombox the Touch uses advanced audio rendering technology to produce superior sound. I am simply amazed at the levels of sound this tiny unit can produce. Using the 4.3 inch touchscreen LCD is a breeze and actually quite enjoyable. You are able to quickly navigate and select your music choices and spend the rest of your time enjoying the entertainment. However, if you are not close enough to the unit to access the touch screen then you must use the supplied remote control. While this remote will do the job I much prefer to upgrade and use the Duet’s remote which is also a member of the squeezebox family. Logitech offers various remotes that can be used with this unit, but you can make do with the one that is provided. The unit itself offers a pretty cool feature when being operated via remote, upon remote input the text on the screen automatically becomes enlarged for easy viewing from a distance. Yet another cool feature that makes you feel as if Logitech thought of everything.
During my Squeezebox Touch review I made a point to try each music service offered and I must say it was quite difficult. There are so many options to choose from it can be hard at times to decide what to listen too. I am not saying this is a bad thing, this just goes to show how wide the range of music available is. Not only can you subscribe to Internet radio like Sirius™ but you can listen to your local stations as well. Another one of the coolest features offered is access to local stations from anywhere in the nation. That’s right, listen to you favorite childhood station from New York, and then switch seamlessly to your local station in Chicago. You never know you may just find a new favorite among the vast stations around the world. Whether it be you music library from the hard drive of your computer, or directly from a download site like Napster™ you will never run out of tunes to listen to. I have created a list of the music services available at this time, and I am sure the future holds more to come.
As if we have not listed enough features in this Squeezebox Touch review, we are not done yet. We have established that as a music player this radio is top of the line, but it also has apps available for download. Apps that offer the ability to connect and view your Facebook™ photos, and pictures from flickr™. Who needs a digital photo frame when you can load pictures directly from a usb or sd card. Or replace your alarm clock, and wake up each morning to your favorite hit list and start the day right! Who knows what will come next but for now I am satisfied. This is a must have for any music enthusiast, and with the ability to work with basically any OS your sure to be compatible.
To sum up this Squeezebox Touch review I must say Logitech has done it again. The Touch is a great addition to the Squeezebox family and would make a great addition to any home entertainment system. The upsides far outweigh the downs, and any fault I can find with the unit is either vary minor or solved by an available addition. We here at Squeezebox Touch Review value any opinions or additions that can be made and we encourage you to send us an e-mail via our contact page.
